About the Same as DSL

DKC no longer recommends Cable Modem Service over DSL Service.  Well it used to be more reliable and was cheaper than DSL Service this is no longer the case.  Cable Modem Service tends to be just a bit faster than DSL but really there is not a major difference.  Both are fine for home users but not reliable enough for a businesses where being up all the time is essential.

Cable Modem Service like DSL Service is a good deal only if you can afford to off line every once in awhile.  If you need to be up all the time spend a little more money and get something more reliable than Cable Modem Service.

The bottom line on all this is that Cable Modem Service is still unreliable.  However it is cheap and it is a lot faster than modem or dial-up service.  If you have a tight budget and you can afford to be off-line a few times a month Cable Modem Service may be for you.  If you are running a business and need to be up all the time Cable Modem Service is not for you!

Quick Update

As much as I hate saying this we are now recommending PacBell DSL over Comcast Cable Modems.  The note from Darren says it all.

Subject: Comcast Connections

Everyone,

In the past, a newly installed Comcast connection was working after the cable guy completed the install and through DHCP you could surf the web immediately and throw away the unopened Comcast CD.  These happy days are over.

I installed a Comcast cable connection this morning.  There appears to be new Comcast procedures for setting up accounts.  After the cable guys has finished you will be able to get an IP from the modem but will unable to transmit or receive any data to anywhere except the Comcast initiation site.  If you use the site you will plagued with dreaded Comcast crappy software.  In order to use the Comcast connection you must obtain a Comcast username and password and this must be somehow validated with the modem.  The most painless way to accomplish this is to call Comcast and insist that they create the account for you and (while providing them with the IP address from the modem) validate the account.

 Darren.
