Islander 36 - Luna Sea

Luna Sea's Broken Mast

What a lousy way to end a day of sailing! Steve Murphy & Kurt Smith's Luna Sea was sailing in the usual blustery waters between Angel Island and the Golden Gate on March 20th when her starboard main chain plate pulled out. When the spar folded just below the lower spreader, the end went in the water just aft of abeam, and Islander spars being as tough as they are, Luna Sea was suddenly 36 feet long and about 30 feet wide!

This naturally made her a little slow through the water! It was also tough to get the sails off her and back to a dock. But after lengthy discussions with Vessel Assist, she was towed to an end tie in Emeryville marina, then into a 65' long slip which still had the top of the mast underwater at the far side of the slip. After a couple of days of trying to get the rig back on deck or cut off, they called the crew at Svendsens' Boatworks to perform an amputation and finally get Luna Sea to Svendsens' dock for permanent repairs.

More History

Apparently Luna Sea was originally called Moonlight (with sail number 589) but was later renamed Space Station and the sail number change to 420.

This is a copy of email between Steve and Dan dated December 2007

Agreed.  He’s also the knuckle-head who changed the sail # to 420 (for most of the fleet it matches the hull #).

I can’t say I never inhaled but until I bought Luna Sea, I did not know that “420” is apparently the code for a pot bust in Marin County.  He thought that would be cool and attract more girls.  With that line of thinking Space Station seems less of a stretch.

Anyway, I am going to be out over the holidays, so how about grabbing lunch some time after the 1st

Moonlight was an OK name but Space Station is probably the single worst boat name I have ever heard!

Thank you for changing it.  I owe you big time.

 Dan,

Hope your well and that your holiday season is festive.

I was going through some old files and came across a few old Luna Sea surveys that I was going to toss but thought I’d ask you if you had any use for them.

I think you know most of the history of the boat (e.g. hull #589 was originally Moonlight renamed Space Station by the guy I bought it from and she became Luna Sea when I owned her), but if you have any use for the surveys or any other old Luna Sea docs, I’d be happy to bring them into the City some day and you can collect them.

Let me know and Happy Holidays.   Look forward to seeing you on the water.
